My Friend, My Neighbor, My Bradda / Rufus Turnbull (One of the BRADDAS ) The previous generation knew where they were when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr died; the Virgin Island's community all will remember where they were when the news of Nick's passing was annouced. Of all places I was in a classroom in Utah when our class president Milton Potter from St. Thomas called my cellular- then in less than 5 minutes, my sister in Miami. The class may have might as well been cancelled as far as I was concerned.
This forum is release for many who can express the way Nick has touched their lives. I have read many of the messages and came to the realization that this forum also relays to the more contemporaries- to include his immediate family- how Nick became the legend we knew.
We had MANY candid conversations about everything.....most will remain confidential. But if you grew up in the early 70's and wanted to go to a 99cents dance a 1/4 mile up the street to hear Milo & the Kings- and you didn't have 99 cents, Nick was the "Tom Sayer" who led you through the bushes at night around the 'onliest' security the island ever knew- Ofc. Clendinen.
"THE BRADDAS" (brothers for the the Spelling police) were the not-so-secret societ of self-proclaim musicians, athletes, and commentators in Bovoni. As young musicians, Nick was the 1st lead singer before he had to good sense to leave us behind. (Fat Albert's band had nothing on us) I played the only real instrument in the band- acoustic guitar, Bimp play the guitar case, Tuma was on the aluminum 6ft ladder. The only instrument Bage could play was his Radio.
The creators for ESPN must have been in our neighborhood and observed where we sat on THE WALL and argued, teased, bantered, and laughed about everything from relationships, politics, and sports. We would read the sports articles in the Daily News embellishing the circumstances their paid reporters fail to document. We even re-inacted instant replays of the Plays of our Day. God forbid that you fail to garner a dance at a recent house party, THE WALL made you live through it again.
As one of my few TRUE friends, Nick knew I was not a JAMBAND fan, which kept our relationship respectfully combative. I also complemented him when I knew he wrote a Calypso Homerun- which were many. He also appreciated when I asked him what will he do when he runs out of nursery rhymes.
Andre "Tuma" Malone, Alvin "Bage" Husband, and Clarence "Bimp" Payne conveyed in their dedication how we grew up. I think Bimp summed it up best when he said that we should not cry, but I truly appreciate the times we had together.
Also, if this forum allows us to somehow speak to Nick directly, I would remind him back in the mid 80's, I told him at a VI Hotel where our bands were, "he was the Micheal Jackson of the Virgin Islands." He simply laughed. The over 25,000 site hits, and over 300 dedications so far definitely concurs with me.

Today would have marked another milestone in Nick's life as he would have celebrated his 44th Birthday. And yet, it's a bitter sweet moment for me because he is no longer here with us, yet I will acknowledge that today as his day- a significant day at that.

I keep hearing these words to this song by Gloria Estefan in my head. From the first moment I heard of Nick's untimely death. And I found out today what they meant.
Nick's Dream was Jam Band. His sweat and tears went into making this band and what he wanted it to be- More than His Dream. Nick's high moments were all his accomplishments and achievements through his hardwork, perserverance and determination. And he managed to make Jam Band more than just 'another band'; he made them shine like a Star while working to provide his family with the best. But now Nick is just a Memory, something like a Dream- We want it so badly and eventhough it hurts because it's hard, we will work hard to get it. But like the song, "Some Dreams (NICK) Live On In Time Forever".
Like technology, he got better as the years went by Promoting his Dream-Jam Band so it can be all worthwhile. But now that he's gone, his Legacy lives on And us, his fans, still mourn.
Rest in peace Nicholas. Today is exactly 2 months 3 weeks and a day since you left. I miss so much that I don't know what to say. I should be over you, but it's not so easy to forget something that meant so much. I loved you then and even now...trust me- Ur spirit will never die!

Yes, let me begin by expressing my deepest sympathy to the family of our late GREAT GREAT DADDY FRI. Mommy, Pops, sisters, brothers kids, and Jackie, its been three months now, and I still feel the pain as if I had just gotten the call yesterday. We may never heal, but we must grow knowing HE is in a much much better place # one, and HE left HIS great music for us to live with. Everytime Jam Band came to N.Y, I always went to the airport to meet them and made sure everybody- Friday and Lenny especally, were okay. And I will miss that because Friday always picked the place where we going eat after.
Friday was a Legand, and I did whatever he asked of me with great pride and joy. I am a DJ here in N.Y now, and I will MAKE SURE YOUR MUSIC FROM DE V.I. WILL NEVER DIE!!! SLEEP WELL DADDY(who we hurt we hurt). Close

When i got the news of Fridays death the first thing i said was stop playen. As the days went by i came to realize that Friday had acutally left us. No more miami jam, Labour day jam, East end jourvet(tola), Road town jouvert (tola) rock city jouvert. It was like the life of carnival was gone. Friday brought smiles to every ones face from the lyrics of his songs or just the rythm. Now Friday has gone i say to the family, keep your heads up god never gives more than u can bear. And to the fans i know it going be hard when carnival reach with out friday but still try enjoy yall self. That made friday hapy seeing every one having fun. And on this note i say Rest in Peace Daddy Fridday you are gone but u will surely not be forgotten.

My hearts and prays goes out to the family of Nick Friday. Friday and I attended Nazareth in his high shool years. I can only hold on to the memories we shared while in school. The candy room was the hang out place and Friday never skip a beat with a good joke and laughter. Everyone knew him by Friday for Jamband, but I can take the privilege of knowing him without the MIKE in his hand. Eventhough we did not see each other on a regular, everytime he came to New York we would run into each other and reminisce. I would always tell him "Friday, I know you are not charging me regular price for your CD." He would laugh and tell me "Hillis, I can't do that." Jackie you are my classsmate and friend, and my heart goes out to you. Van, you are also a very good friend and the same holds true. Stand tall and keep the faith, because he lives in his music and in everyone's heart who he has touch, and in that we can take comfort. Close

Many times I tried to send my condolence but couldn't because my fingers wouldn't type and the tears will start dropping and I wasn't accepting your passing. Within minutes of you passing I received a phone call and was shock and displaced by the news. You know how people like to make joke all the time, I had to confirm the tragedy. It has been a month and some. still have not come to gripps with your life to heaven (how selfish of me).
Nick, I could remember the christmas tramps from Smth Bay to Fort Milliner. I couldn't wait for election time because there was nuff jams, whether its parking lot or Four Winds. Till this day I remember my first boatride and had school the next day and my mother wake me up with some licks because I didn't get up in time to go to school. I still prefer boatrides than a land jam any day, like I use to tell you. Mehson, I could remember after Hurricane Hugo when the island had curfew and the police try to stop the jam in Four Winds and you pull out the letter from the govenor and you send them police on the there way because we was going to jam till morning. HOOP, mehson you left a hole in my heart that is taking some time to heal. Up to the night of your passing I was blazing my Jamband cassettes and CD's till the neighbor call the police for my noice all around 1am in the morning. Till this day I am still celebrating your life. You always tell me, LIVE IT UP!!! and that is what I am doing. You will be glad to know that I completed my education like we talked about many days/nights on the phone. I could remember the conversation when I was telling you that I feel like dropping out and you tell me to make sure I stay in school and once I finished you would have held a big bashment. I finish and I am enjoying the bashment another way. I could go on and on. I had the pleasure of playing mass with you for St. Thomas Carnival 2005, Atl, and St. John Carnival 2005 and will cherish all the memories that you left me with. Nick, the Virgin Islands miss you as i do greatly. Till we meet again. Keep shining the light over me. I willl continue to have you in my world. Like you always said... HOOP be good... Close
